Bill Harris and Dale Wester will be formalizing a New Member Training and Orientation program for our Club. We have had an informal process in place for a couple of years. The 2010 SCTA Board likely will be encouraging all member Clubs to develop a training and orientation process. In that light, we will be formalizing our procedures.

REMINDER: 2010 SCTA and Club dues must be paid by January 31st or member will be dropped (refer to Road Runners Const and By-Laws, VI B 3). The 2010 dues will be $85. ($55 SCTA and $30 Road Runners).

Willie Martin invited all Road Runners and friends of Road Runners to the Annual Beer and Brats Christmas Party at the El Martin Garage on Dec 18th. Festivities begin at 5:30pm. Drive your Hot Rod.

Mike Ferguson thanked Club members for all their support and presented the President’s gavel to Pres Elect Jack Masson. Willie Martin asked members to give Mike a standing ovation for his long service as President. Pat Riley pointed out the progress the Road Runners Club has made in the past 5 years and thanked Mike for his leadership. President Mike pointed out the long service of Reese Adams as Treasurer and asked members to give him a standing ovation.

October El Mirage Results & November Start Positions - The October El Mirage results are now posted on our Results / Points / Standings webpage. Back online - On Sept 30, I fell while trimming a tree in my backyard. Suffered a 30% compression fractrue of the L2 Vertebra. Complications led to emergency abdominal surgery on Oct 10. Finally returned home at midnight on Oct 21. Things are getting back to normal slowly but surely . Will be receiving home health care and physical thearpy visits for several weeks but my goal is to spend more and more time each day at the computer and get this website back up to speed and to get caught up on my duties as Road Runners Secretary and Historian. Thank you to all who visited, called, sent cards, said prayers and sent well wishes while I was in the hospital. That meant a lot and it helped a lot. Thank you!

I'll get the October Meet results for the Road Runners posted as soon as available. This sure seems odd..... racing at El Mirage today and I'm not there. First meet I have missed in 5 years I think. - Jerry Cornelison, Webmaster / Road Runners Sec. (posted Oct 25, 2009)

Road Runners Bonneville Speedweek 2009 Report - We had five Road Runners Teams racing at Bonneville this year. Several members also came up to spectate and lend a hand. Racing teams included the Harris & Wester Camaro (Bill Harris and Dale Wester), McRat Racing (Pat McSwain), Riley Land Speed Racing (Pat Riley and Jerry Cornelison), Scott Baxter's BSA (Scott Baxter) and Mark Cavender Hayabusa (Mark Cavender). Other Road Runners on the Salt included Jim Kitchen, Gary McGavin, , Charles Shimko (working in Motorcycle Tech Inspection) and Mel Weber.

We had a variety of results: some "hurt" race vehicles, some new records and one new Red Hat. Dale Wester driving their XXO/GCC Camaro qualified on Monday with a downrun of 201.517 (202.664 exit speed). The next morning he backed it up with a 199.564 pass for a new class record of 200.540 and his RED HAT! Congratulations Dale!

Pat McSwain driving his "street legal" GMC diesel pickup layed down an amazing pass on Saturday. His 2 1/4 trap speed was a blazing 197.068. In mile 2 he heard a "bang" and pulled the chute rolling through the 3 mile lights at 193.033. Investigation in the pits revealed a blown intercooler hose which they were able to repair. However, the EGT's all had been up around 1700. Suspecting he might have hurt the motor, he started his backup run on Sunday morning with an easy first mile. When he nailed the power in mile 2, the engine literally went up in smoke. He turned in at mile 3 at 149.432. When all the dust settled his mile 2 times were averaged for a new A/DT record of 175.033. Congratulations Pat and sorry you hurt your engine.

Pat Riley, driving his XO/VGC, was fighting handling and trans/clutch problems for his first two runs. After a spin in mile 2 of his second run, adjustments were made. A third "easy, shake down" pass to test out adjustments and changes made to the car resulted in a 147.960 qualifing run (on his own 143.778 record). On the backup run on Wednesday morning the trans problems reoccured resulting in a dissapointing 3rd gear pass at only 130.244. Looks like the off season head and cam change have produced a very strong engine but the trans problems continue to be a bug-a-boo. Rumor is that the little maroon coupe is about to get a new trans, probably an automatic like the one Harris & Wester run in their Camaro.

Scott Baxter and his 1946 BSA have finally earned a well deserved Bonneville Speed Record. His vintage BSA still presented some challenges during his qualifing and backup runs but Scott's hard work and persistence finally paid off. Scott added a side car to his bike this year and was running in the 350CC/SC-VG class. On his downrun on Saturday, the bike stuck in a middle gear and ran 52.605. During the return run on Sunday morning, the engine quit and he coasted through the lights at 45.153. The result was a new record at 48.879. Congratulations Scott. You worked hard for this for a long time and it is well deserved.

Mark Cavender brought his 1350cc/P-P Hayabusa out for his first Bonneville experience. Even though he is licenced for 200mph at El Mirage, Mark had to go through the full licensing procedure for Bonneville. After several days of licensing passes, Mark was consistently laying down 185mph passes on the Short Course. He changed sprockets for higher gearing and moved to the Long Course. He ran 183 and 184 passes on the Long track. Mark had a great time, ran the fastest ever times on his motorcycle and says he will be working on the bike to find the additional 20mph he needs to run on the existing record.

All in all, it was a great Bonneville Speedweek. Hope to see more Road Runners on the Salt next year! (posted August 16, 2009)

Dave will be upgrading to SCTA membership beginning next year. We also welcomed Prospective Member Jake Krotje back for his second Club meeting.

Road Runner Meeting Notes - Tuesday, June 9th, 7pm at Ed Martin Garage - It was an unusually cool June evening when the Road Runners gathered at the Ed Martin Garage for our regular monthly Club meeting. Too bad the "May gray" & "June gloom" has not produced some rain to help repair the lakebed at El Mirage!

Tuesday evening, we welcomed three guests: Charles Shimko, Candace Salas and Eddie Jones. Charles, attending his fifth meeting, submitted his application for membership. He plans to race a Suzuki GT250K and is considering a build on his 1970 Opel GT. He also will be training as a Motorcycle Tech Inspector. Charles was voted into the Road Runners and we welcome him.

President Mike Ferguson gave a report out on our annual Road Runners Banquet/BBQ held on June 6th. We had a good crowd and lot's of really good food. Following dinner, awards were presented to Mark Cavernder (#1011B 1350cc/P-P, Hayabusa) for 2008 Road Runners High Points and the Ferguson & Adams Team (#85 B/GC, Camaro) for Top Speed at El Mirage (182.584mph). The Harvey Haller Memorial Trophy was not presented this year.

At our meeting on Tuesday, Vice President Jack Masson proposed that we present the 2008 Harvey Haller Memorial Trophy (for outstanding Club service) to Buddy Fitzgerel in memory of his long 49 year membership and his service to and accomplishments with the Road Runners during that time. The membership approved the idea. Buddy's record in his '50 Ford , XF/PRO - Alvaney & Fitzgerel "Thrifty Fifty", set at El Mirage in June 1984, at 130.813mph still stands. We lost Buddy to a heart attack last November. He is truly missed.

Willie Martin announced that the 75th Anniversary Celebration for the Ed Martin Garage (aka "Road Runners Club House") will be held at the Garage on July 25th from 4 to 8pm. Food and libations will be provided. Road Runners, friends and customers are invited. Bring your Hot Rods for a parking lot display. We welcomed two guests, Sarah Burns, member Wendell Burns daughter and Ricky Rogers, prospective member. Ricky told us that his membership application in on temporary hold. Unfortunately the bike that he and racing partner Dean Jigamian planned to race had an unfortunate meeting with a guardrail. Dean is ok but the motorcycle was not as fortunate.

We also had his vintage 60's era, silver fire suit that he used in his B/STR and the "Thrifty Fifty" XF/PRO before he got his newer fabric suit. The family recently presented these items to the Club following the passing of our long time member and friend, last November.

We had two guests for this meeting, Bill Carling (prospective member - third meeting) and Charles Shimko (prospective member - fourth meeting). Bill Carling submitted his application for membership and was voted into the Club. He will be racing his 2007 Harly Super Glide (Dyna), beginning at the May meet. Welcome to the Club Bill! Charles Shimko will be submitting his membership application following the May El Mirage meet.

Reminder that you need your BLM/EL Mirage Pass to get on the Lake in May. You can mail your check and return address (ASAP!!) to Judy Sights - SCTA Treasurer, and she will mail your Passes back to you. Judy's address is listed on page 163 of the 2009 SCTA-BNI Rulebook.

Our annual Banquet/BBQ date has been changed to June 6th. Turns out that May 23rd, or original date, is Memorial Day Weekend this year. Mark your calendars for June 6th. More details to follow.

If more news is available on this before May, we will let members know.

At the SCTA Meeting, the Rod Riders, who were spearheading the "write in" campaign regarding the USMC Land Acquisition of Johnson Valley ORV Area reported that 9000 signatures were filed in opposition. Thanks to all who took time for "their voice to be heard." Don't know how this will all turn out. Will keep you posted on what we learn.

Obituary for Buddy Fitzgerel (Reprinted from Orange County Register) -

"Fitzgerel, Henry "Bud" Unexpectedly, Bud passed on November 12 of heart failure doing what he loved best, driving home from a car club meeting in Riverside in his prized sports car. Bud was born July 6, 1941 in Whittier, CA. His parents Hank and Ruby Fitzgerel preceded him in death. He lived in Whittier 67 years. Bud attended school in the East Whittier School District and worked for the same District for thirty (30) years. He also set numerous records in track at California High School. He went on to serve his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. Our brother was a son who cared deeply for his family. Caring for our mother in her later years, remembering his sisters, Bev and Sue by sending flowers on their birthdays. Buddy and his former Racing Partner, John Alvaney (deceased) still hold the XF/PRO record of 130.813, set at El Mirage in 1984 in their "Thrifty Fifty" Ford Coupe. Buddy raced in a variety of classes over the years at El Mirage, Muroc and Bonneville. Buddy joined the Road Runners in 1959.

August Road Runners Meeting - Our tradition is to suspend our regular August business meeting and hold a "Bon Voyage" dinner gathering to send our Bonneville Speedweek participants off with wishes for safe racing, good luck and lots of records.

On Tuesday, August 12th at 7pm, we will meet at The Old Spaghetti Factory in Riverside (3191 Mission Inn Ave. - click here for directions). We have a room reserved for our group. The food is very good and prices are reasonable at the Spaghetti Factory.

SCTA-BNI website: http://www.scta-bni.org/

Next race date at El Mirage is September 14th. In case you don't have it, here is the BLM information number for El Mirage. The recording gives El Mirage info and lakebed conditions: 1-760-388-4411 (posted July 18, 2008)

Road Runner Meeting Notes - Tuesday, July 8th, 8pm at Ed Martin Garage - The Club welcomed guest Pat McSwain, prospective member (second meeting).

Jim Onorato, from Levittown, NY was voted into the Club as an Associate Member. Jim comes from a family with a long Drag Racing history in the New York area. He also is a Hot Rod builder and historian. Jim is now bringing his son into the family legacy as they build a '73 Chevy Nova 396 for the strip. Welcome to the Road Runners Jim!

It was noted that we have a large number of new Road Runners members. Bill Harris has volunteered to develop a New Member Orientation program to cover Road Runners, El Mirage and Bonneville processes and procedures. More information will be following.

A lot of Club business was conducted and a full copy of the Road Runners Meeting minutes are available upon request. (Contact Jerry Cornelison for copy.) One key point of discussion needs to be mentioned. All members, especially those involved with racing and Patrol Duty activities at El Mirage, need to be sure you have read the current El Mirage Procedures and Patrol Duty information pamphlet. Penalties for infraction of rules and procedures are being assessed by SCTA. We have not had any problems related to our Club and members. Reading and understanding the ELM and Patrol info pamphlet will ensure we continue with that record.

Road Runners tradition is that we suspend our regular August business meeting in favor of a dinner meeting to wish our Speedweek competitors "Bon Voyage" and good racing. In that tradition, our August meeting will be held at Miguell's Mexican Resturant in Corona on Tuesday, August 12. Jack Masson is handling the details. As soon as information is available, it will be posted on this News page also.

Next regular business meeting of the Road Runners is Tuesday, Sept 9th at 8pm, at Ed Martin Garage. Also, if in the area, don't forget "Burrito Thursdays" at Ed Martin Garage! (posted July 9, 2008)

During the same time he also raced jalopies at the old Carrell Speedway. Following his lakes racing and jalopy racing he raced Class F Production cars in the SCCA. Pat is retired and lives in Fountain Hills, Arizona with his wife Susan. Pat was also voted into the Club. Welcome new Road Runners!

President Mike Ferguson gave a report on our annual Club Banquet/BBQ held on May 31st.. We all had a good time and there was lot’s of good food. To quote Mike, “If you left hungry, it was your own fault.” Three awards were presented: Top Speed Trophy went to the Ferguson & Adams Team, the Top Points Trophy was awarded to the Harris & Wester Team and the third award was deferred to our June Club meeting. The award that carried over from the BBQ was the presentation of the Harvey Haller Memorial Trophy. President Mike Ferguson presented the perpetual Trophy and a commemorative Plaque to Pat Riley at Tuesday night's meeting. Pat and Delia were out of town during the BBQ.

For the benefit of our newer members, the following is an explanation of the Harvey Haller Memorial Trophy. The award is named for Harvey Haller, Road Runners member from the mid 40’s to 1953. He was a recipient of the Pete Dean Memorial Sportsmanship Trophy – 1948, participated in first Bonneville Speedweek – 1949 and is a member of the Bonneville 200 MPH Club – 1953. Harvey Haller lost his life in a Streamliner crash. The Harvey Haller Memorial Trophy is presented to a Road Runner member who, like Harvey Haller, has gone above and beyond the call of duty in service to the Club. The Trophy is not presented annually but rather, only when deserved. Congratulations to all the 2007 Road Runners award recipients.

Full copy of the Road Runners Meeting minutes available upon request. Contact Jerry Cornelison for copy.

Associate Member John Julis joined us also, driving to the meeting in his cool '32 roadster with the brand new 302 Ford "Cobra" engine installed. Nice ride!

We had a lengthy discussion and vote on proposed rules and penalties from an SCTA Committee chaired by Pat Riley. The intent of the Committee's work is to provide clearly defined and consistently applied rules and penalties for infractions of El Mirage procedures. This has been long overdue and generally favored by all the SCTA membership. Great work by Pat and his Committee. The results will be presented to the SCTA and likely will be added to the El Mirage Procedures this season.

Bill Harris told the Club about the upcoming Old Fart's Racing Team Picnic and Car Show that will be held at the National Guard Armory at Fairmont Park on June 8th. Since this is not an SCTA race weekend, Bill suggests and encourages that the Road Runners participate in this event as a Club activity. Bring your race car and/or hot rod and show it at the Old Fart's show. Sounds like fun!

The Road Runners Annual Banquet/BBQ will be held on May 31st, beginning at 2pm (Weekend following Memorial Day). BBQ for steaks fires up at 5pm. Members free, guests $5.00. He is building a 63 1/2 Falcon Futura. Car classification yet to be determined. He hopes to have the car ready to race in May. Wendell's fiance, Margie Mayer attended the meeting as a guest. He will attend the March meeting and submit his membership application at that time.

Club duties were discussed. Volunteers for Course Walk, Course Prep, Club Reps and some of the Patrol assignments were set. The balance of the Patrol duties will be volunteered for or assigned by Thrusday, Feb 21st, and posted on the website (Race Schedule and Duty Assignments Page). Jack Masson, Vice President and in charge of Patrol Duty Assignments will be contacting you regarding your Patrol Duties, if assigned/volunteered for.

There will be several new additions to the El Mirage Procedures document. As soon as the new ELM is available, there will be a link from our website (also on the Race Schedule and Duty Assignments Page) to the revised document.

The entry fee charges for El Mirage proposed by the BLM have been postponed until Oct 1, 2008. As soon as all is finalized, we will have information available. Two good by-products of the proposed entry fees are that we should, once again, have an official BLM presence on the Lake during our race events and there will be control over access and damage to the lakebed when it is wet. Both of those are good!

Next regular meeting of the Road Runners is Tuesday, March 11th at 8pm, at Ed Martin Garage. Also, if in the area, don't forget "Burrito Thursdays"! (posted Feb 13, 2008)

Congratulations to Richard and Rachel Ross - The Harris & Wester Race Team has a new member. Hadyn Lee Ross, 6 pounds, 14 ounces, was born on Jan 18, 2008, at 2pm in Joshua Tree. Mom and little Hadyn are both doing great. Dad reports that "big sister" Teagan is a little bit jealous but they kind of expected that. Hadyn won't make her "debut" at El Mirage as early as Teagan did (6 days old) but look for her at the first meet of the year in May. (posted Jan 19, 2008)

SCTA-BNI 2008 Rules Changes: Rules changes for Cars - Rules changes for Motorcycles (posted Nov 23, 2007)

Road Runner Meeting Notes - Tuesday, November 13th, 8pm at Ed Martin Garage - Mike Retzlaff, prospective member from the Sacramento area, attended the meeting as a guest and submitted his application for membership. Mike and his wife Sheri had also attended the El Mirage Meet this past weekend. They are building a 1982 Camaro to begin racing next season. Scott Baxter was in the area on business and attended also. It was nice to have some of our Northern Road Runners "fly south" for the meeting!

President Mike Ferguson commented on our successful 2007 season. We had lots of good participation both in racing and in members supporting the racing and SCTA activities. Several members set records both at El Mirage and Bonneville. The Club ended the year with three teams in the Top 25 in SCTA Points (Harris & Wester, Anderson's Norton and Pat Riley Racing). It looks like once the final stats are tallied for 2007, the Road Runners will end up in 5th or 6th place. We also added three new teams, one who made the final two meets of 2006 (Campbell Racing) and two who will race next season ( Mark Cavender Racing and Team Retzlaff). Good year! Next year will even be better!

Club elections were held for next year's Road Runners Officers. Elected: President, Mike Ferguson; Vice-President, Jack Masson; Secretary, Jerry Cornelison; Treasurer - Reese Adams; Records Keeper, Amanda Ferguson; Sgt. at Arms - Bill Anderson. Congratulation to the incoming Officers and thank you to the 2006 Board.

The revised DRAFT copy of the updated Road Runners Constitution and By-Laws is available for review on our "Members Only" page. We will be voting on approval at the next (December) meeting.

Everyone who was at El Mirage and attended the BBQ party hosted by Richard and Rachael Ross (with lots of help from Dianne Harris, Bridget Wester and Delia Riley) thanked them again for heck of a great party. The "little BBQ" to celebrate Teagan Ross' first birthday and the end of the 2007 racing season, ended up being attended by at least 42 Road Runners and guests from a several other Clubs. The ladies cleaned out the pantries and fridges in their campers and trailers and everyone ended up well fed. After the eats, we all sat around two pit fires and enjoyed visiting with our friends. A great time was had by all. There is lot's of enthusiasm about doing it again next year.

Next Road Runners meeting is Tuesday, December 11, 8pm at the Ed Martin Garage (unless we see you at "Burrito Thursday" before then).

Ray Brown, Charter Member of Road Runners passes - Ray Brown passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2007. Memorial services will be held at 3PM, Monday, November 19 at Forest Lawn, North Hollywood. Ray is listed with the American Hot Rod Foundation as one of the Pioneers of Hot Rodding. To read a bio and see pictures, including a video interview with Ray, visit the AHRF Website, Pioneers Page, and from the "Pioneer Search" menu, select "Ray Brown". (updated Nov 18, 2007)

BBQ @ El Mirage - Saturday following Course Walk - Come help celebrate little Teagan Ross' first birthday at a big BBQ hosted by Mom (Rachael) and Dad (Richard) Ross. Little Teagan made her debute at El Mirage last year at the tender age of 6 days old. She is a regular in the pits and at the starting line when Dad is driving the Harris & Wester Camaro.

Richard says, "..... So we figured what better place to celebrate than El Mirage and during the last meet of the year kind of a birthday / end of the year celebration. We will be BBQing a lot of chicken and will have potato salad so any kind of side dishes are welcome like a big potluck and everybody is invited...." (posted Nov 6, 2007)

2008 Racing Schedule - El Mirage and Bonneville - The 2008 schedules are posted on the SCTA-BNI website and on our Road Runners Race Schedule and Duty Assignments page.

Proposed update to Road Runners Constitution and Bylaws - The DRAFT copy of the updated Road Runners Constitution and Bylaws has been completed by the review committee and is posted for review on the Road Runners Member's Only webpage. We will be discussing this item at the next Road Runners meeting on November 13th. (posted Nov 5, 2007)

October El Mirage Results - Unfortunately, it was a blowout..... literally! Due to very high winds and dangerous conditions, the meet was called after only a few runs. Will post a more detailed report on the October Meet in about a week. I'm off to the USS Archerfish Submarine Reunion in Laughlin early in the AM. (You can't believe how difficult it was getting a submarine up the Colorado River all the way to Laughlin!!) Anchors Aweigh.............. (posted Oct 21, 2007)

Special Road Runners Meeting - October 18, 10:30am at Ed Martin Garage - Casey and Tim Campbell, father and son, became the newest Road Runners by a vote of members present at a special meeting called today by President Mike Ferguson. The Campbell Family has been working very hard this year, building their new Chevy C10 race pick-up. They will be competing in the A/MP class. This has been an enthusiastic and energetic build from the time they decided to "go racing" after attending the May El Mirage meet. They will make the first "shake down" and "Rookie" runs this weekend at El Mirage. Casey, the dad, and his wife Debi live in Modesto. Their son Tim and his wife Jody live in Riverbank. Welcome to the Road Runners Campbell Family!

Jack Masson will have his #4800 G/GALT back on the Lake this weekend ready to race. Glad to see you back. With Jack's car back and the Campbell's new entry, the Road Runners will have 5 cars and 2 motorcycles racing this weekend. This should be a great weekend for the Road Runners!! (posted Oct 18, 2007)

Road Runners meeting notes - Tuesday, October 9th, 8pm at Ed Martin Garage: Mark Cavender submitted his application for membership and was voted into the Club. Mark's SCTA membership will be effective 1/1/08. Look for Mark and his Hayabusa on the dirt at El Mirage next season. Mark and his wife Julie reside in Riverside. Welcome to the Road Runners Mark!

Reese Adams (Sec/Trea) conducted tonight's meeting in place of President Mike Ferguson. Mike and his family are in Arizona with Mike's father. Unfortunately, Mike's dad is very ill. We all wish Mike's dad and family all the best.

The Harris & Wester Team (along with "guest" Team Member, Pat Riley) described their recent "turn around" trip to World Finals at Bonneville. The Team left Riverside at 8pm last Wednesday. They drove all night, arriving in Wendover at 7am Thursday. They made a quick stop an McDonald's for breakfast and then proceeded directly to the Salt Flats. They quickly set up their pit and headed to Tech then towed to Staging. They were quickly moved into the Start Line and were making their first run almost before they had time to even think about it. Following their successful Qualifying run (see "Flash!!!" commentary below) they were in Impound thinking they finally had time to rest and relax a bit. Because a huge storm was blowing in from the west, Race Officials decided that the Backup Runs would be held that afternoon instead of the next morning. They towed back out to the Start Line for their Backup Run. They successfully backed up their earlier Qualifying Run, set a new record and proceeded back to Tech for Certification. Following Certification, back to the pits, load the race car, tear down the pits, load up and leave the Salt since the weather was deteriorating rapidly. Finally, they were able to check into a hotel and get some rest after all had been up for some 40 hours or so with most of that time spent on the road or on the Salt. Next morning, a quick survey of the weather strongly suggested that there would very likely be no racing on Friday or any more at all for that matter. Snow and ice was forecast just west of the normal return route home so our Intrepid Team decided to come home via Salt Lake City, thus adding an additional 2 hours and 170 miles to their, already long, trip. They arrived back in Riverside, late evening on Friday. A long but VERY successful trip and I suspect that if you asked them, they probably wouldn't change a thing! Congratulations Harris and Wester Team and to the "Shoe", Richard Ross.

Nominations were held for Road Runners Officers for 2008: President - Mike Ferguson; Vice President - Jack Mason; Secretary - Jerry Cornelison; Treasurer - Reese Adams; Records Keeper - Amanda Ferguson; Sgt at Arms - Bill Anderson. Slate of Officers will be voted on at the November meeting.

The next El Mirage meet is October 21.

On Saturday, October 20, 9am to 1pm the Second El Mirage Days Clean-up for 2007 will be held. It is VERY IMPORTANT that SCTA (including the Road Runners) have a good showing at this event. Please come out and lend a hand for this event. Meet at the El Mirage Visitor Center/BLM HQ office for registration, beginning at 8am to sign in. Cleanup work begins promptly at 9am. Our work parties will be concentrating on the west end of the lake bed beyond the area where we usually Stage. There will be a $3 pancake breakfast for early arrivals. A free BBQ will be held at the Visitor Center at 1pm following the lake cleanup. (updated Oct 10, 2007)

Patrol Duty for the October 21 meet: AM - Mike Miller; PM - Bill Anderson.

See you all at El Mirage! (posted Oct 9, 2007)

FLASH!!! - From Bonneville World Finals - The Harris & Wester Team are on the salt and things are going well. Richard Ross, piloting the #675 XXO/FALT Camaro, made a Down Run pass this morning at 199.856 on the existing 191.612 record. His exit speed was 200.979! They will make a Return Run pass either this afternoon (rain looms in the overnight forecast) or in the morning. Hopefully he can back up his 199 run with a 201 run and earn his Red Hat! Way to go boys! Congratulations Richard! (posted Oct 4. 2007)

PM Update - Return run vehicles are towing to the line for Record Runs. Weather is coming in. Head winds are 7-10mph. Good luck Harris & Wester Team. Get'er done Richard!! (updated Oct 4. 2007, 3:30pm)

Evening Update - New Record! - Richard's Return Run in the #675 Camaro was 193.121 giving the Harris & Wester Team a new XXO/FALT record of 196.488. Not bad for a GMC 6cyl powered, steel bodied, "door slammer"! There was a 10mph head wind during the Return Run as a big storm bears down on the Salt Flats from the west. Don't know at this point if there will be any possible attempt tomorrow or not. Very good job guys and Congratulations! (updated Oct 4. 2007, 6:00pm)

Wally Parks passed away today, September 28, 2007 - The Road Runners exist because of what Wally helped create 70 years ago. Thank you Wally for our Club, our "Road Runner" and our heritage. Rest in Peace.

Heartfelt condolences to Richard, David and the Parks Family from the entire Road Runners Family.

(updated Sept 22, 2007)

Road Runners meeting notes - Tuesday, September 11th, 8pm at Ed Martin Garage: Mark Saxlund brought examples of the new run of Road Runners plaques. Prospective members Casey and Tim Campbell from Modesto will be visiting us at El Mirage this weekend. They will be submitting their applications for membership and attending to some SCTA techinical and admistrative details in preparation for racing their Pick-up later this season.

A three member committee of Bill Harris, Richard Ross and Jerry Cornelison was appointed to review and update the Road Runners Constitution and By-Laws and submit the results to the membership for approval. This is to be completed by the end of the racing season (Nov).

Bonneville Speed Week 2007 - Results posted - see Results and/or Records webpages for details. (posted Aug 17, 2007 - updated Aug 18, 2007)

July Road Runners El Mirage Results - July results and Sept start positions have been posted on our Results page. (updated July 18, 2007)

We had a mixed bag of results for the July El Mirage meet.

The Harris & Wester Team #675 Camaro, with Dale Wester driving bumped the XXO/FALT record that Dale set last meet by .986mph. New record is 170.206. They are definitely ready for Bonneville! They could be chasing 3 class records at B-Ville: XXO/GC, XXO/GALT and XXO/FALT

Amanda Ferguson in the Ferguson & Adams #85 C/GC Camaro, had a very good run of 181.124 on a 191.961mph record. Rumor has it that the #85 may get an engine rebuild soon, possibly before the next El Mirage meet in September.

The Ferguson & Martin #1169 D/Gas Roadster piloted by Mike Ferguson ran 182.939 against a 201.894 class record. They continue to make progress and are eagerly awaiting arrival of some "secret stuff" for engine modifications prior to Bonneville.

Bill Anderson on his #592B 500cc/APS-PG (Partially Streamlined) Norton had another good meet. This meet speed (122.787) was a little under the speed he ran in June (124.809) but he is "knocking on the door" of the minimum class record of 127.000. He is looking for a successful Bonneville meet too.

Scott Baxter on his beautiful little #540B 350cc/A-VG BSA was fighting transmission and clutch gremlins again. He continues to make progress each meet but the gremlins keep winning. Scott made a full course pass of 67.268 on a 101.528 record. Scott will be ready for Bonneville, no doubt!

The Riley, Cornelison and Blount #1938 XO/VGC was pitted next to Scott. Apparently the little transmission and clutch gremlims made their way into their pit also. They were expecting to have a good tune up run for Bonneville, but alas, the car would not shift. First pass produced a 98.156 run against the new 139.375 record they set last meet. They attempted a second pass and that ended in a turn out.

Fearing the worst they tore into the trans/clutch problem Tuesday following the meet. The problem turned out to be a nut that had backed off one of the three shift arms on the trans! Well.... That's racing! At least they don't have to look forward to a big rebuild and $$$ thrash prior to Bonneville.

Finally, there is a really cool article in the new September issue of Street Rodder magazine about El Mirage racing. It is really well done. Well written article by someone who understands and appreciates what Lakes Racing is all about. There is also a good story in this issue about Dan Gurney's early days of hot rodding and lakes racing when he lived in Riverside.

Here is a web link to the Street Rodder El Mirage article that appears in the Sept. issue: http://www.streetrodderweb.com/events/0705sr_el_mirage/ (posted July 17, 2007)

July Meeting Notes - Prospective member Mark Cavander attended his second meeting. The Club approved the amendment to the Road Runners Constitution and Bylaws creating the new "Out of Area" member status. Prospective members, the Retzlaff family from Sacramento and the Campbell family from Modesto have been notifed.

Jim Kitchen suggested that since we will have so many Road Runners at Bonneville this year that we all get together for a group dinner one evening at one of the Casinos. We all thought that was a good idea. If you are at Bonneville, check with a fellow Road Runner for details.

The August (14th) regular Road Runners meeting will be suspended. This is our normal custom due to Speedweek activities. Generally we have a Club dinner to celebrate our Bonneville entrants. This year, our meeting date falls during Speedweek. Jack Masson will still organize the dinner for those who are in the Riverside area and not at Bonneville. Contact Jack if you would like to attend the dinner here.

Jerry Cornelison (Webmaster) asked the members to submit pictures of their Street Rods and Hot Rods for a new addition to our Road Runners website called "Road Runners Street Rides". This page will feature pictures and info about the "fun" cars our members drive on the street.

Patrol Duty for July 15 Meet - Gary Foster (AM) - Scott Baxter (PM). Meet at the Timing Trailer at 7am to sign in.

Next Road Runners meeting - Sept 11, 8pm at the Ed Martin Garage, Riverside. (posted July 11, 2007)

Road Runners 70th Anniversary BBQ - The Road Runners 70th Anniversary BBQ was held at the home of Club President, Mike Ferguson on Saturday, May 19th. Mike, wife Dusty and daughter Amanda were great hosts. Thank you! Around 50 or so, current and former Road Runners and their guests enjoyed great steaks and lots of homemade goodies. The evening was capped off with a beautiful big anniversary cake, complete with an icing version of the Road Runners famous logo on top.

Unfortunately, some of the former Road Runners and current Road Runners who had planned to attend were unable to make the event but those who did enjoyed some good conversation and recalling of some old stories and reconnecting with old friends. Former members attending were Jim Alvaney, Gene Cole, Jason Dahl, Chuck Embrey, Gary Nichols, Mel Weber and Mike Wheeler. Don Francisco was represented by his nephew (and Road Runners Associate Member) Charles Rollins and Rex McAfee, his business associate from Bench-Racing.com. Charles brought along Don's Road Runners Club jacket and original Road Runners plaque (designed by Wally Parks) from the 40's. He also presented copies of Don's 1966 book, "Maximum Performance Stockers for Strip or Street" to all past and current members. A very nice keepsake! Wally Parks was unable to attend but his son Richard sent a letter from the Parks family that President Mike Ferguson read to the crowd.

The 2006 Road Runners awards were handed out at the end of the evening. The 2006 Top Points award went to the Harris & Wester Team. What a fantastic year they had and they seem to be beginning the 2007 season right where they left off last year. Amanda Ferguson, driver for the Ferguson & Adams Team, won the 2006 Top Speed award making that her second Top Speed award in three years as a driver. The Harvey Haller Memorial Trophy was awarded to Jerry Cornelison. (posted May 22, 2007)
