All losses of our Shipmates are difficult but this loss is especially tough! Somehow, I expected "Pig" to live forever. He was the Chief Archerfish Historian and Archivist, an Author (Gallant Lady), Editor of the A-Fish-L-Blast, Keeper of the Sailing Lists for all three Commissioning Periods of Archerfish, dedicated to tracking all WWII Submarine Sailors from all Boats for USSVI, and much more. He was the Shipmate most responsible for bringing our Archerfish "Band of Brothers" together. Above all he was a Great Friend and Great Shipmate. "Pig' will live forever in Archerfish memories. God Speed my Friend!

ADAMS, Samuel W. Jr., CAPT, USN, Ret., 85, died Jan 11, 2021, leaving behind his wife, daughter, sister and many other family and friends. Sam was born Jul 6, 1935. As an Auburn University graduate, he entered the Navy in 1957, serving for 30 years with sea duties on various destroyers and submarines. Stationed back in Washington, D.C. Sam held important positions at Naval Headquarters, met his USN wife Mary and had baby Erin. In 1988, he and his family returned to Alabama and built a beautiful house in Foley. After the Navy, he enjoyed family, tax preparation, travel, stained glass, house and yard work, good food and wine. Visitation followed by Mass - St. Margaret's (10am), Tuesday, 19 Jan. Burial at Arlington Cemetery (TBD). In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to St. Benedict School, https://saintbenedict.net. Published in Mobile Register and Baldwin County Jan. 18, 2021.

FLEMING, Kenneth Lee, ETCS(SS), USN, Ret., 78, of Ephrata, PA; formerly of Blandon, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, August 2, 2019, at Wyomissing Nursing and Rehab Center. He was born October 2, 1940, in Aurora, Ill., son of the late Allen and Myrtle (Ness) Fleming. Ken joined the Navy in 1960, retiring after 22 years as a senior chief electronic technician submarine qualified. Ken was proud to be a member of the Silent Services, spending time on seven submarines [ including: Guardfish (SSN-612), Archerfish (AGSS-311)] during his tours of duty. While in the Navy, he received his Bachelor's degree from Chapman University in 1981. Upon retirement from the Navy in 1982, he was employed by General Electric Nuclear Services, as a senior nuclear engineer. He moved to PA as a startup engineer for the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant. After retiring from GE in 2001, he enjoyed traveling the US with his wife. Many adventures were had. Growing up in a railroad family, Ken had a lifelong love of trains and had become an ardent volunteer of the WW&F Railroad in Maine. He rediscovered his teenage hobby upon retirement, and once again became a ham radio operator. He could travel the world on that radio. Ken's love of Lancaster County began as a seasonal camper at Lake In Wood Resort in Bowmansville. This led to his volunteering at the Weaverland Produce Auction for seven years where he made many friends with the workers and sellers. He was the crazy Englishman who talked to the horses. This was the highlight of his retirement. He so loved Lancaster County that he moved to Farmersville five years ago. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Christine A. Fleming; and his son, William "Ben" Fleming, of Columbia, SC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 23 years, Genevieve "Betsy" Fleming, who passed in 1994; and a brother, Marshall Fleming. Service will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ken's memory may be made to Salvation Army, 131 S. Here is some information from our Reunion Coordinator, Bill "Dinky" Earl:
I now have the information on holding a reunion in San Francisco. This is the plan. After many calls to the hotel and the Mare Island base commander this is what I plan on doing because of the costs involved in doing it any other way.

We will not have our own hospitality room but instead will put together some tables in the convention hospitality room for our get together area. I am not putting together a registration form or asking for a registration fee. For a banquet we will get together at one of the restaurants, one that has a room for a group, and each can order from the menu and pay for their own meals. I will bring the flags and bell for a memorial service at a time and place to be determined.

For hotel reservations the number is 1-800-233-1234, specify the Hyatt Regency, San Francisco Airport. It is at 1333 Bayshore Highway, Burlingame, CA 94010.

You do not have to be a member of USSVI to come to the reunion or register in the hotel. Tell them you are a sub vet and get the rate of $104.00 + tax.

I don't need people to e-mail me. We will just see how many show up. Ken Fleming and I were the only ones in Rochester so we will see how many show up in SF. There is lots to do in SF so folks should be able to enjoy themselves as well as get to see old shipmates. I do hope we have 20 to 30 show up. That would be a good group. If no one steps up to hold another reunion this will be the last one. This will be the third one I've put together and I won't be doing another. Hershel Arthur "Dusty" Lighter, 94, died April 25, 2014. Born August 31, 1919 in Dodge City, Kansas, Dusty experienced first-hand some of our country's greatest trials (the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, Pearl Harbor and World War II), and also some of its crowning achievements (the World War II victory and the development of the nuclear Navy.)

On Black Sunday, April 14, 1935, he and his buddies were playing ball in a vacant Dodge City lot when they saw the giant black dust clouds rolling into town. Before they could make it home, they were engulfed in dust so thick they couldn't see their hands held in front of their faces. Upon graduating from high school in 1937, Dusty headed west, like so many others, to look for work. He harvested hay, picked grapes and olives and cotton, worked as a short order cook, and in a plant nursery.

After developing an interest in diesel mechanics, and anticipating the impending war, Dusty volunteered for the US Navy's submarine service in 1940. On December 7, 1941, Dusty had just completed some schooling at the Navy Base at Pearl Harbor and was awaiting the return of his submarine, the USS Cuttlefish (SS171), when the Japanese attacked. He was strafed by a Japanese fighter plane as he ran from the mess hall, where he had just finished breakfast, to his barracks. He spent most of that day standing watch on the top of the base's diving tower. From that unique vantage point, he witnessed the day's horrific events unfolding.

During the war, Dusty made three war patrols in the Pacific aboard the USS Cuttlefish, and six war patrols on the USS Archerfish (SS-311), which he helped put into commission at the Portsmouth (NH) Naval Yard. On the Archerfish's fifth patrol, November 28, 1944, it sank the Japanese aircraft carrier Shinano on its maiden voyage leaving Tokyo bay. This remains the largest ship ever sunk in wartime by a submarine. The Shinano was a top-secret weapon that was unknown to US forces. It was not until after the war that the military finally determined what was sunk by the Archerfish that day.

Dusty retired from the Navy after 23 years of service in 1963. He then worked at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, CT, where he was a sound technician, conducting sound surveys on the nuclear submarines being built there. During his 20 years of employment at EB, Dusty rode each new submarine, often on its initial sea trials, including the first Trident class boat, the USS Ohio. Dusty retired from Electric Boat in 1983 and relocated to the Creeds area of Virginia Beach, where he tended his massive vegetable garden and maintained his acre of paradise like a park.

Throughout his life, Dusty's idea of a vacation was to jump in his car and drive somewhere. He drove cross-country and back at least eighteen times (although to be honest, we've lost count), sometimes with his young children or grandchildren riding along. At the ripe young age of 85, he made his last cross-country drive ... alone. Dusty remained amazingly healthy and vital well into his 90's. He attributed his good health to two habits: 1) take a long walk every day if possible; and 2) stay away from doctors. In his later years, he lived in a condo in the Nimmo area of Virginia Beach and walked all over. Many local residents will remember repeatedly seeing the white-haired gentleman dressed in light blue, strolling that area's roads and sidewalks, or hiking the oceanfront boardwalk from beginning to end and back.

Dusty was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Betty Jane (Duncan) Lighter, as well as four of his five siblings. He is survived by his son Bruce Lighter and wife Brenda of Marietta, GA; his daughter Anita Lighter and partner Paula Renzi of Yakima, WA; and his daughter Virginia Burke and husband Daniel of Virginia Beach. He also leaves behind four grandchildren: Melinda Warbington, and Christopher, Emily and Jamison Burke.

Funeral services will be private. The Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements. The family suggests that anyone wishing to honor Dusty's memory go for a long walk on a beautiful day or pile their family into the car and go on a road trip. After so many cards and calls from all of you, I wanted to let everyone know what I have been doing these past few months and my progress recovering from the stroke that I suffered on Nov. 4. I was fortunate that we were able to get to the ER in plenty of time to receive the clot buster, so I had no physical or mental damage, just balance and coordination problems which affected my right side. As a result I could not coordinate movements of my right leg or arm and of course I was unable to walk. I lost a lot of muscle mass during this period.

After three weeks of home therapy (physical, occupational and speech), I entered outpatient therapy at the hospital for 2+ months of physical therapy and about 5 weeks of occupational therapy. An evaluation determined that if I ever had any speech problems, the speech therapy done at home fixed it. I have now been in pool physical therapy with a personal trainer at the local YMCA for well over a month which has fine tuned the tremendous progress I made in therapy at the hospital out patient facility in Foley. I am able to walk confidently now on a walker and have been practicing on a rollator (4 wheels). I still have some minor issues on the walker with early fatigue in the lower part of the right leg, foot, and ankle. The pool therapist and the massage therapist are attacking this problem and I expect some relief here soon. I am also practicing with a cane while holding onto some object with the other hand. Still have some minor problems with the balance issue but certain pool exercises are helping with that. Of course I still use a wheel chair most of the time as it is more convenient at home and necessary immediately after rigorous therapy which still leaves the right leg weak. The emphasis during the whole rehab has been rebuilding muscle mass and correcting balance. If I had not been attending the gym regularly since arriving in Foley, I would not be this far along in getting back on my feet. I hope to be walking on my on soon.

During these past months, Mary has had to shoulder most of the load. I cannot drive, so she has to take me everywhere- therapy, doctors, etc. I have been of little use around the house, so she has learned a lot of new skills. She has been wonderful

I received a message from Ken Henry this morning. Colleen passed quietly in her sleep, without pain, at 10:28 AM Wednesday Morning. She was burried at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell on Friday morning at a graveside service with immediate family present. Please keep Ken and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace Colleen.

I received a message from Bill "Dinky" Earl regarding potential Archerfish Reunions at the 2013 USSVI Convention at Rochester, Minnesota and/or the 2014 USSVI Convention in San Francisco. Dinky is willing to set up Archerfish Reunions in conjunction with one or both Conventions if there is sufficient interrest. He points out that attendance has been low at our last couple of Reunions.

To make this work, we will need to know the level of interest. Dinky has asked that I conduct a poll of all Archerfish Shipmates (First, Second & Third Commission Periods and our Civilian Scientist Shipmates from Sea Scan). We would like a postive response either way: NOTE: You do not need to belong to USSVI or SubVetsWWII to attend the Reunion.

12/06/05 - Eternal Patrol & Key West Second Commission Sailing List - James M. Wilson ENC(SS) - Eternal Patrol 09/16/72 (Shipmate Wilson had been on the Missing List). Interesting note that Ken Henry discovered while researching information about Chief Wilson: His orders from Chopper were signed by "S. R. McCord, LT, USN, XO" who became CO of Archerfish a couple of months later. On 2 Feb 1963 The Secretary of the Navy presented Chief Wilson with the Navy Commendation Medal. The officer that witnessed the presentation and signed the service record entry was S.W. Adams, Jr., LT, USN, Personnel Officer, USS TIRU (SS-416), XO on Archerfish in 1967/68. James Wilson reported to boot camp 6/15/1937. After several surface craft, he went to sub school in Sept 1940. On 7/22/41, he "qualified to perform submarine torpedo boat duty" aboard the 0-6 (SS-67), later he went to the S-boats and then made 9 war patrols on GREENLING (SS-213). He finally retired in July 1967. Quite a career and some interesting coincidences with LT McCord and LT Adams, later CO and XO on Archerfish.

11/27/05 - WWII Eternal Patrol & WWII Sailing List - John Boyce Watkins, Jr., TM3 - Eternal Patrol 11/23/05.
John retuned to service following WWII and college on the GI Bill. He received a commission as Ensign in the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and served more than 23 years, rising to the rank of Captain. He retired in 1973. (Shipmate Watkins had been on the Missing List).

He obtained the photo from Bruce Byrne, former EM1(SS) aboard Snook. The missing photo is of the frist shot by Snook, a MK37-2 torpedo which hit near Archerfish's stern, apparently doing minimal damage. The second shot, a MK14-5 torpedo was the hit we had pictures of.
